Dragon Knights - March to war

As I said in Junes plannign post, I'm trying to get my Eldar ready for the new edition as I have the least to do on them. To this end, I spent some time on Monday (in between finding and trying to fix a leaky water pipe...) making sure all the Wave serpents had switchable weapon options, which they now do. Part of this was overcoming what to do with the Dark Elf dragon variant which is different enough from the others to be a bit of a pain with positioning. In the end the pieces I have used I think look great, and the gun mounts are I think from the Wraithknight kit.

The real progress however is on the man himself... I was stumped for what to do to detail the Wraithknight really as I had a basic idea with the armour and pose etc but it just looked like it was sitting on the dragon part of the model with no integration. I wanted to try and use guitar-string cabling, but didn't have any thick enough, and it isn't really easy to use for anything other than it's intended purpose.
I broke out my Greenstuff roll maker and started making rolls, initially thinking they would't be long enough for what I wanted. I threw caution to the wind and just started adding them to the model, and I think the results speak for themselves.

I added some more parts to the back of the carapace today and want to add a few more cables to integrate the 'power plant' I added but all in all I'm over the moon with how it looks currently :)

There are lots of rules leaks going around currently, and to be honest it's all pretty meaningless to me. The min-maxers are out in force though saying what's useless and what isn't. I'm just looking forward to getting some games with a 'new' force :)

Up and coming - June

I barely got anything done from my list last month :( in my defence, I wasn't accounting for the 8th edition announcement and various related excitement.

This doesn't mean that I've not done anything though, I've been working on getting armies ready for the new edition of 40k which has been no small task in light of not really knowing what is going to be good to have and what to equip it with :)

This month's work list is as follows, in context of the new edition of 40k:
Exodites - The Waveserpents & Wraithknight are very close to being table ready (except for paint) so I want to get these done, as my Eldar army is n the best state to be game ready when the new rules are released.
Space Wolves - Keep working on detailing dreadnoughts, character conversions & Thunderwolf conversion. Until the rules are out, I won't know what best to equip infantry with so I've put a bit of a hold on making them for now.
Bases - Still lots of bases outstanding from various Malifaux crews so I want to try and catch up with these
Scenery - Only two mdf building kits left so I'd love to get these off my list and assembled :)

The Forge

My friend and I have been discussing the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 quite a bit , and I decided to join the Facebook group for the gaming group at the new game store - Forge26 in my home town.
I also popped in to meet everyone and have a nosy at the games going on on Wednesday which is their late night opening for gaming, and what i would probably be going to after 8th :)

The guy that runs the store was great, and the atmosphere was really friendly and no one seemed to mind me wandering round listening and watching what was going on. I spoke quite a bit to the guy who runs the store, and pre-ordered the books I need to use both my Space Wolves and my Exodites when the new rules are finally out.

I've asked a few people in a few places what I should be trying to assemble my marines as in order for them to be most likely to be useful in the new edition and most people have recommended to hang fire until the rules are out for certain. For the time being then I'm going to either be trying to get either my Waveserpents finished, The Thunderwolf Lord conversion progressed, or painting Malifaux. No rush for anything. It isn't like any of it is going anywhere soon. I would like to be able to play Space Wolves pretty soon though ;)

In the midst of assembling Grey Hunters ready for 8th edition, I realise that not only do i not currently know what specialist weapons are any use, but I also have no way of knowing what will be useful in the next edition.
Luckily for me this was on the same night I was looking for a cyclone missile launcher that I could use for my terminators as they get very limited weapon options it seems. Enter Anvil Industry who I've seen banded about a fair bit for alternate space marine parts. They had just what I needed on both counts.

I've just now sat down to test the multi option special weapons, and I'm really very impressed. The (optional extra) magnets are snug in the indents on the pieces and the resin is very clean and well cast with good detail, I managed to cut, clean and glue one complete 'carbine' in under 5 minutes.
I'm really very pleased and would highly recommend these guys to anyone looking for similar options, or any other space marine type options to enhance their forces, or for a change from the standard GW options :)

Wolves of Winter - Unrelenting

Once the bug bites, I find it hard to stop!

I made up the third 'rider' for the first set of three Thunderwolf cavalry, but because I needed a set of rider style legs for the Thunderwolf character conversion, I had to improvise. I must say that I'm pretty pleased with this, and it looks pretty much exactly how it did in my head which I'm chuffed about.

I'm sitting down tonight to start work on the first pack of Grey Hunters :) I've made a note on what they (currently) can & can't take so i don't get carried away, but I'll be applying the 'rule of cool' pretty liberally :D

On a side note, I went through a phase of buying d6 like they were some kind of precious commodity, perhaps a future currency in a post apocalyptic wasteland...
So I picked out the ones I'll be using for my Space Wolves :)

Busy weekend so maybe i'll get time to snap a couple of WIP shots before Monday

Wolves of Winter - Dread wolves

Title is a bit forced, but I can't think of anything better on a Monday morning :p

After my last post about the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 my long time gamer friend sent me some pictures of conversions he had done for new iterations of characters he has featured in each version/re-work of his chaos marine to date. Needless to say that this was the gauntlet drop I needed to get me into gear making Space Wolves.

I'll admit that when I got my box out of the cupboard, I spent an hour or so in which I had hoped to get some hobby done being overwhelmed by the amount of stuff I had both in progress and not knowing where to pick up, and NoS and not knowing what to make from it with regard to weapon options etc. It was still useful to spend the time working out what was what though, and the following day I picked the Contemptor dreadnought conversion, and the Thunderwolf cavalry to work on.

I spent what felt like forever fiddling with the skull face-plate/helmet from the standard dreadnought kit, but finally made it fit. I also put the time into magnetising all the weapon options. I'd like to get some of the Forgeworld weapons for this dreadnought chassis, for aesthetics more than anything, the Heavy Bolter option looks awesome. Rules-wise it might make sense to have something other than Mulit-Melta/assault cannon too. Maybe I could use the standard dread chassis as more of a gun carriage?..
I just need to embellish with wolf iconography/furs and this is all done :)

It's possibly been around a decade since I assembled my last space marine, so it was a bit strange cutting and cleaning the pieces for the cavalry riders. I had trouble with the posing of the rider with the axe, as I wanted to use the 'hand holding fur' to make it look like he's actually riding the mount.  I want to try and make sure that whilst they look cool, I also include the weapons they should have somewhere on the model, like pistol holsters, and the Chainsword on Boltgun guy.

I need to do some more bases for the wolves but I'll be keeping them separate until they've been painted.

I think next up I'll try and make a squad of Grey Hunters. I've fallen into the trap before of making all the cool stuff like characters and special units, and then really not having much motivation to complete the rank & file guys. So, once the cavalry riders are built I'll do a unit of ten chaps with weapon options whilst I add detail to the dreadnought.
Then maybe i'll start work on the Thunderwolf Lord mount conversion :)

8th Time's a Charm

There is a lot of noise and excitement at the moment about the upcoming edition of 40k. After all these years I can only say I'm skeptical. However with their recent revamp of the social media dept and engagement with the community, I can also say i'm quietly hopeful.

MY gaming buddy and I have been chatting about the sneak peaks that have been coming about about changes in the new edition, and have each agreed that if the rules are free as they are rumoured to be, then this would be a great chance for us to revamp his Thousand sons and my Space Wolves & Eldar Exodites.

I have a fair sized force of Space Wolves as pretty much a blank slate, with only a few miniatures assembled. I'm almost tempted to wait until the new rules are released in order to build these so that I can make them into useful configurations. The reality of this is more likely to be that I'll put them together as whatever looks good, and worry about it/proxy later :)

On the Exodite side of things, it all really depends on what the new rules look like as to what I should add next. I have a well rounded force with just the Wraithguard left to build, and the dragons to add weapon mounts to (and paint of course). I'd like another Wraithlord anyway even before the new dreadnought rules were teased, and I'm not convinced I want to make shining spears, or a warlock jetbike squad so I'm not sure what to do with the cold ones I have . I do want to make non-mounted warlocks and take another look at what aspect warriors I'd like to add and convert. I suspect that the merging of different Eldar into one codex will mean that I can make Wych/Howling Banshee proxies for example.

Other than that, it's quite exciting. This is the game that got me into the hobby after all, and without it I wouldn't be into roleplaying or any of the table top games I love to play and paint now. Or maybe I would, but it was definitely the top of the slippery slope I'm skiing down now :p

Breached - Fated

We had our first session of Through the Breach Yesterday, which was a great success for everyone I think.

The character creation process is very unique, and leaves a very distinct idea of the character before even assigning attributes and skills etc. However, it also leaves the option to completely buck the trend of the characters 'Station' (background) and go in a different direction. perhaps you've left your old life behind, perhaps you're spurning your past in favour of a new start?
My character was always going to be one of a couple of things  so when I flipped the card relating to the 'Mad Scientist' station, my decision was made :)

I blundered through the skill selections without really understanding the impact they would have on the game, other than ensuring that I selected the right skill sin order to cast spells.
I chose the tinkerer pursuit as this seemed to fit the best with Mad Scientist, and also gave me access to elemental spells, and the ability to enhance weapons/attacks.

I really enjoyed our intro adventure, and I'm going to be reading up around my various abilities and where I want to progress to, how different pursuits affect aspects of gameplay :)

If anyone is thinking about playing the game, I would definitely recommend picking it up as it's a lot of fun

On the Payroll - M C

I was going to try and do something in the style of Sons of Anarchy's SAMCRO. However, 'Wild Ones Motorcycle Club Original' comes to WOMCRO which sounds weird...

I've made some decent progress with the nightmare McCabe box set, which I think is well worth sharing, especially after all the sulking and carrying on I did when I first got it :p

I also had the crazy idea (probably where SAMCRO came from above) to proxy the Wastrels from the standard McCabe box as some of the characters from Sons of Anarchy from the Through The Breach kit, so we shall see what I can manage to make of that :)

Bases are done, and waiting model placement before I add any grass tufts, if at all. Of course, I couldn't wait to see how it all looked so I can hopefully still get Cherri Bomb finished without either making a mess of the base or it getting in the way :p

The models themselves have been a real joy to paint with the exception of the already troublesome Ramone Biker, but I think they all look pretty good so far.

I'm not exactly rushing through these, but they've somehow made their way to the top of my painting list while there is still so much stuff that I just primed and stuck in a drawer :/ I am trying to get some older WIP models done at the same time though (Alt Franc, Brutal Effigy, Lone Marshall, Pale Rider) and they are pretty close to being done too.

Up and coming - May

Last month was a little looser in definition than previous iterations, but I did manage to do everything I wanted to on the vague list I set out.

The usual suspects are still loitering though...
Scenery - I've made what I think is enough scatter terrain to go along with my table setups, so the only thing that I think is left are the two mdf building kits I have left to assemble. Then perhaps some crates/similar once I can see how all that looks setup for games.
Product Reviews - I think as long as I stick to one or two a month while there are outstanding items, then this doesn't need to be added to future monthly lists :)
Infinity - I'd like to get my Sogarat Feuerbach painted up as my proof of concept for a colour scheme, but not necessarily this month. As long as I make a start I'll be happy.
Bases - Simply put, I've got a lot of bases to make for models that are sprayed and waiting for paint, so I'll keep chipping away at these.
